Interview as an international student in China

When I began my undergraduate studies at Jiangsu University of Technology in China, I was not just stepping into a new academic chapter — I was stepping into a completely new world. As an international student, every classroom, every festival, and every conversation offered me a chance to learn, adapt, and lead beyond borders. From the very beginning, I made a conscious decision: I would not limit my university life to academics alone — I wanted to be an active part of the diverse, multicultural community that made our campus so unique.

My journey quickly grew beyond the classroom. I participated in nearly all of the university’s international student activities, from cultural exchange programs and debate competitions to global festivals and student leadership forums. These experiences were not only vibrant celebrations of diversity but also opportunities to build bridges among students from dozens of countries. I often found myself leading group discussions, coordinating events, and helping new students navigate life in China — whether it was assisting them with academic orientation or simply introducing them to local culture.

Over time, my peers began to recognize my willingness to help and my passion for connecting people. I was entrusted with leadership responsibilities in various student-led initiatives, where I learned how to manage multicultural teams, resolve challenges, and motivate others toward shared goals. Through these roles, I discovered that leadership is not about authority — it is about empathy, communication, and the courage to take initiative.

One of the most memorable parts of my journey was working alongside both Chinese and international students to organize cultural exchange events that highlighted unity through diversity. These events helped break down barriers of language and culture, turning our campus into a true global family. I also actively represented international students in discussions with university authorities, ensuring that our community’s voice was heard and that newcomers felt welcomed and supported.

Looking back, my years at Jiangsu University of Technology were more than just a pursuit of academic excellence — they were a profound exercise in leadership, cultural understanding, and personal growth. I entered as a curious learner and emerged as a confident global citizen ready to inspire and lead others across boundaries.

As my involvement grew, so did my responsibilities. I was soon recognized as an international student leader, representing my peers in various academic and administrative discussions. I frequently attended meetings with university leaders, where we discussed ways to enhance both academic and extracurricular opportunities for international students. These meetings allowed me to voice the concerns and suggestions of my fellow students, contributing ideas to improve integration, engagement, and overall campus life.
